Social Media Round Up – Stand Still… Now Run!
Gone are the days of ‘planking’ and ‘the running man challenge’, the latest social media trend to take over is the #MannequinChallenge. Just as the name suggests, the craze involves simply uploading a video of a group of people remaining as still as possible, channelling their inner mannequin – much like our favourite childhood game musical statues. The challenge has seen a number of TV presenters, music moguls and A to Z listers taking part. Britain’s beloved TV presenters Ant and Dec took part in the challenge on the live show ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’ while stars of the 2016 NBA teamed up with the First Lady Michelle Obama to film their challenge in the White House. However, in true Kardashian style, it seems the one to gain the most publicity was performed by Rob Kardashian and his partner Black Chyna as they welcomed their baby, Dream Kardashian, into the world. With a disgruntled expression on Chyna’s face as she was ‘pushing’ and Rob at the foot of the bed ready to catch the newborn, both in remarkable frozen stance, it’s safe to say that the couple showed some serious dedication to keeping up with the latest social media trend. It might not quite be the festive season yet, but clearly ‘tis the season’ for viral challenges. Hot on the tail of the Mannequin Challenge, the #AndysComing Challenge is also spreading like wildfire in our social media feeds. Inspired by Pixar’s Toy Story movies, short videos show a group of people going about their normal lives until someone shouts ‘Andy’s Coming’ (Andy being the owner of the toys in the classic animated trilogy). Upon that holler, everyone drops to the floor, à la Woody, Buzz and co. If, like us, you’re puzzled as to why a movie franchise which last had an instalment release in 2010 is sparking a viral trend in 2016, a more topical version has also arrived. The #TrumpIsComing Challenge, obviously in response to the new president elect, shows the group reacting (appropriately) in absolute panic and running away. Anyone else got ‘Challenge’ fatigue yet? We are now two weeks in to David Attenborough’s Planet Earth II series and it is already being hailed as the most watched nature show of all time. The first episode drew in a staggering 12 million plus viewers and social media has been in a frenzy ever since. After just escaping the jaws of a gang of hungry racer snakes, the baby iguana from episode one now has its own Facebook page where it keeps us updated with its daily challenges. With over 39,000 likes and counting it seems the gloves are off against its arch enemy, the racer snake. In response to the Facebook page, the rival racer snake has set up its own pageand has since acquired over 3,000 likes. Pah, feeble. #TeamIguana! A man named Mark Woods captured the nation’s heart last week as he announced his beloved best friend Walnut, the whippet dog, was soon to be put down due to old age and ill health. Woods started a social media appeal via Facebook for all dog owners and pet lovers to join him on #WalnutsLastWalk by taking their dogs for a walk at 9:30am on 12 November. Posting his favourite photo of Walnut, Mark wrote: “Sadly I am having to have Walnut euthanised on Saturday 12th November and so we will be having a last walk together at 9:30am. I would love it if dog lovers/ owners and friends would join us for a celebration of Walnut.” Hundreds of people and their pets joined Walnut in support of his last walk turning a very sad day into a celebration. As well as achieving national news, those who could not make the walk took to social media to pay their respects to the pet pooch using the #walnutslastwalk hashtag which trended on Twitter. Mark later took to Facebook to share the sad news that Walnut had passed away and thanked everyone that took part in #walnutslastwalk.*sniff*EVERYBODY STAND STILL!_
