Social Media Round Up – Periscope Producer And #Benjalasi

PERISCOPE PRODUCER_

Live streaming tool, Periscope is expanding beyond amateur content shot on phones with its new Periscope Producer feature. It will allow creators to generate a special URL that they can stream to from a wide array of devices, including professional cameras, studio editing rigs, satellite trucks, games, VR headsets, drones and potentially 360 cameras. Since its debut on Twitter early last year, Periscope had been confined to live video feeds taken on a smartphone. To start, Producer will be limited to a small group of media companies such as Disney’s ABC News and major brands such as Louis Vuitton with it being extended to all users in the not too distant future.

#WORLDMENTALHEALTHDAY_

This Monday, Twitter saw celebrities, influencers and brands come together to raise awareness for World Mental Health Day. Twitter users, including Ed Sheeran, James Corden and Dermot O’Leary showed support by drawing a black circle (which symbolises being whole) on the palm of their hand and posting an image to the social platform with the hashtag #WorldMentalHealthDay. A number of other celebrities also contributed to the hashtag tweeting advice and some of their own experiences with mental health. Jordan Stephens, from hip-hop duo Rizzle Kicks, took to Twitter to launch a new anti-stigma campaign from the YMCA and NHS called ‘#IAMWHOLE’. It was great to see celebrities, influencers and the rest of the Twitter community come together for such an important cause.

ARE PETS THE NEXT GENERATION OF SOCIAL MEDIA USERS?_

We all have our favourite Insta-famous pets (@tunameltsmyheart remains top of our list) and it seems that the future of social media now lies in the furry paws of our pets. At least in Russia, where a social media site is launching a platform to allow pets (or let’s be honest their owners) post updates about their social lives (yep, you read that right)! The website will be called DruzhOK’ (literally translated means ‘little friend ok’) and is a completely new concept for social media. In terms of the mechanics pets will be registered by name, breed, gender and age. Tinder for dogs and cats? That’s probably unlikely but they might find a new friend to chase balls in the park with.

#BENJALASI_

Bake Off fans are used to saying goodbye to one of the contestants every week, so it came as a shock when Benjamina’s farewell on Wednesday night’s episode had the nation, on social media at least, in a frenzy as she was leaving buddy Selasi behind. Mourning Bake Off fans compared Benjamina and Selasi’s ‘split’ to that of #Brangelina a few weeks back with one user tweeting “forget Brad and Angelina, this is the saddest breakup of 2016 #GBBO”. This follows last week when viewers couldn’t handle the “outrageous” flirting between the pair. Finalist Seleasi shared a tweet about Benjamina’s departure and also hushed romance rumours with a brief – “she’s a proper sister to me” – Oh Selasi.
