Social Media Round Up – How Artistic Are Your Selfies?
This week our social media feeds were filled with inspiring posts from the weekend’s Women’s March. The seed was originally planted in Washington in response to Trump becoming president and cities all over the world joined forces to hold sister marches, including a small group on a research trip in Antarctica. Also this week, while on the promo trail for the Trainspotting sequel, Ewan McGregor took to Twitter to explain the reasoning for his no-show at Good Morning Britain. The Scottish actor posted, “Was going on Good Morning Britain, didn’t realise @piersmorgan was host. Won’t go on with him after his comments about #WomensMarch”. This was in response to Morgan, in his usual controversial and provoking manner, having posted, “I’m planning a men’s march to protest at the creeping global emasculation of my gender by rabid feminists. Who’s with me?”. Good on you Ewan!
Back to something positive, here’s the Independent’s round-up of some of the great banners from the marches.
TIME TO TAKE A SELFIE?_
Masterpiece or tacky photo? That’s the question which is on the tip of everyone’s tongue this week as London’s Saatchi Gallery is planning a new exhibition highlighting the importance of the selfie as an art form. Widely recognised as a means of self-expression, the exhibition will trace art history from portraits by the likes of Van Gough all the way through to the celebrity selfies of today. Visitors can also submit their own selfie for inclusion in the exhibition as the Saatchi gallery is asking people all over the world to post their best poses using the hashtag #SaatchiSelfie.
Harry Potter fans were left mystified this week with the suspense of the hashtag #Followthespiders causing a stir on social media. It all began when Warner Bros Studio Tours tweeted a 10 second video with the caption “looking for something? All you need to do is #followthespiders”. The video clip showed a trail of black spiders, all heading in the same direction. Although there was little information revealed, it caused much excitement and speculation among Harry Potter fans as to what was to come. Warner Bros has announced that all will be revealed today. We’re keeping a close eye on social media for all to become clear…
Earlier this month social media went crazy over a restaurant owner from Turkey after he was videoed chopping up meat and seasoning it in a very enthusiastic way. Nusret Gökçe’s signature move is sprinkling salt from the tips of his fingers along his elbow and into the pot. He has since become an internet phenomenon known as ‘Salt Bae’ with a host of memes surfacing across social media and celebrities wearing t-shirts with his now famous pose on them. This week, Twitter users in the capital had a virtual jump for joy after Salt Bae announced that he would be opening a branch of his restaurant in London within the next few months. We are looking forward to seeing Salt Bae and his signature move in action, watch this space…
